NRL, a 15-year-old, was sentenced to four years and four months for the culpable homicide of Keith Rollinson, after pleading guilty under Section 76. This was reduced from an original six-year sentence.
The incident occurred on 2 February 2024 when Rollinson, a 58-year-old bus driver, was involved in a confrontation with NRL, who was intoxicated and denied entry to Rollinson’s bus. The altercation escalated after Rollinson tried to take NRL’s phone, leading to NRL repeatedly punching him. Rollinson later died from cardiac arrest triggered by the struggle.
Despite NRL’s youth and prior good behaviour, the High Court upheld the original sentence, noting that while Rollinson’s actions were provocative, NRL’s violent response was excessive. The appeal was dismissed, and the court ruled the sentence, after a 25% reduction, was appropriate.
