The prison population of Scotland has fallen by 4.1% in the last two years. This is in line with the overall prison population in Europe, which altogether has fallen by seven percent.
The Council of Europe’s Annual Penal Statistics for 2018 published the statistics this week and this has continued be a downward trend from Scotland since 2012. There are now 136 prisoners for every 100,000 people in Scotland. Some countries in Europe have very dramatically decreased of the last two years with Romania’s prison population falling by 16 percent.
