Deputy Chief Constable Mr Kerr has voiced how he is very surprised by the increasing levels of sectarianism in Scottish football after he joined Police Scotland six months ago, after working in Northern Ireland as an officer for 30 years. Mr Kerr has also voiced the offensive behaviour at football matches has also increased over the last 12 months with many police officers being targeted.
These comments were made at a NHS Scotland meeting regarding the matter. The Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012 which was meant to deal with this matter was repealed last year as it was said to unfairly target football fans. An independent review of policing at football matches in Scotland is due to be take place beginning from next week.
