Mr Cairney and Ms Jones have been charged and are currently standing trial at the High Court in Glasgow for the murder of Margaret Fleming in Inverkip who they had cared for. The murder is alleged to have occurred in 1999 or 2000.
Ms Fleming has now not been seen for 19 years. Previous school teachers have given evidence to Ms Fleming’s ability to care for herself and level of intellect. The couple are also accused of fraud for claiming benefits for Margaret while she was no longer alive.
The alarm was raised by the social work department after a benefit claim was made for Margaret in 2016 claiming she ate from a dog bowl. When police arrived at the house they were told Margaret had escaped and thereafter had not returned because she saw the Police. The couple deny the charges. The trial before Lord Matthews continues.
