The Scottish Government is set to invest £6.5 million to extend remote jury centres across Scotland to allow the resumption of Sheriff Court jury trials in December. There has not been a Sheriff Court jury trial in Scotland since March 2020 which has lead to a backlog of cases estimated to be around 1,800.
Remote jury centres are set to be in place by early 2021 with the sheriffdoms of Glasgow and Strathkelvin and Lothian and Borders set to have remote jury centres in December 2020. This shall be in a similar manner to the centres already in place for the High Court where jurors watch trials from cinemas.
