The scheme aims to provide redress for postmasters with minimal bureaucracy. Eligible postmasters can accept a fixed settlement of £600,000 or opt for a full claim assessment if they believe their losses exceed that amount. This assessment will be conducted by the Department for Business and Trade, which will ensure transparency and provide guidance on eligibility and redress calculation.

The scheme follows the overturning of hundreds of postmaster convictions under criteria including prosecutions by the Post Office or relevant authorities, offences related to Post Office business from 1996 to 2018, and relevant offences like theft, fraud, and false accounting involving the Horizon system.

Lord Chancellor Shabana Mahmood emphasized the importance of justice, acknowledging the courage of affected postmasters and the effort to quickly and fairly compensate them for the miscarriage of justice they suffered.
