Mr Angus, who was serving a sentence at HMP Edinburgh has been the first prisoner in Scotland to pass away from COVID 19. The man was under a lifelong restriction order in relation to sexual offences committed by him. A number of prisoners, it has been reported, are having to self-isolate. The number of prisoners in Scottish prison has been reduced by approximately 500 since the Prime Minister announced the ‘lockdown’ measures. The First Minister of Scotland has commented that a fatal accident enquiry will place placed surrounding Mr Angus’ death adding further: “We would always see prisoner release as a last resort, and I think people would expect us to do that. But we have made sure that the powers are there if we think that is something that is required to keep our prisons safe places for prisoners and those who work in them.”
