Police Scotland is hiring civilian investigators to assist with major crime investigations, fatal accident inquiries, rogue police officer probes, and COVID-related deaths in care homes. These civilians will perform tasks such as conducting interviews, gathering evidence, and attending court, with a two-year contract and a salary of £30,629—higher than that of new police recruits.
The Scottish Police Federation (SPF) criticised this move, arguing that the force should focus on hiring more officers, especially given the recent decline in police numbers. SPF noted that officer levels are at their lowest in over a decade. Politicians also voiced concerns, with some fearing the impact on police morale and resource allocation across the country.
Police Scotland defended the initiative, stating these roles address specific high-demand areas where police powers aren’t needed, and this prevents officers from being taken off the frontline.
