Figures announced by the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service show that 468 solemn cases at Sheriff level were concluded in March, indicating an increase of nine percent over pre-covid levels
when compared to figures from 2019/20.
However, the SCTS also announced that despite an uptick in cases being cleared, there has been a 31% increase in petitions, compared to pre-covid levels. This indicates that solemn cases are
expected to significantly rise in the future.
According to the figures released by the SCTS, there continues to be an increase in new solemn cases overall, with 100 new evidence-led solemn cases beginning in March – representing a 6% increase compared to March 2019.
