David McGregor, a 50-year-old offshore worker from Edinburgh, was sentenced to five years in prison for attempting to smuggle a handgun into the UK.

US law enforcement intercepted a package in June 2023 containing a Sig Sauer 365XL handgun, which was intended for McGregor’s ex-partner in Dundee.

McGregor had searched online for firearms and purchased the gun through Telegram and PayPal, stating he wanted to “keep her safe” while working offshore.

He later admitted to his actions, describing his motivation as simply wanting to be a “naughty boy” but claimed he had been “ripped off.”

His ex-partner was unaware of the gun, though McGregor had insisted on receiving the package.

Despite his chaotic personal circumstances, McGregor pleaded guilty to attempting to acquire and possess a firearm.
