Mark Byrne, 51, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 12 years for the murder of his brother, Paul, 47, in May 2022. The brothers had been watching a Celtic v Rangers football match together at Mark’s home in Glasgow when a confrontation occurred.
After a dispute over a phone, Byrne stabbed Paul in the neck and chest in what was described as a “frenzied” attack. Despite his brother lying in a pool of blood, Byrne left the scene and later went to another sibling’s home, where he was arrested. Byrne, who had no previous criminal record, initially pleaded guilty to culpable homicide, but the Crown rejected the plea. His defense lawyer described the killing as a “moment of madness” and a tragic event that left the family devastated.
