Iain Packer was convicted on 33 charges, including sexual assaults against nine victims and the murder of Ms. Caldwell, for which he received a life sentence with a punishment part of 36 years, backdated to February 2022.

His offences involved domestic violence and assaults on sex workers, and he denied most charges, claiming consent and suggesting others were involved in the murder.

The trial judge highlighted the severe psychological impact on the victims and determined that the murder warranted a punishment part of 22 years.

Packer’s counsel argued that a 36-year wait for parole was excessive but accepted the judge’s methodology.

Lady Dorrian upheld the sentencing, emphasising the appalling nature of Packers’ crimes over 26 years affecting vulnerable women.

The court found the punishment part reasonable, reflecting the seriousness of the offences.

Ultimately, Packer’s appeal against the sentence was refused.
