Following on from the success of Channel 4’s Courtroom Documentary ‘The Push’, we can be expecting to see high profile murder cases being televised in Scotland in the near future.
Cameras are now being introduced at the Court of Appeal in Edinburgh following positive feedback from top judges regarding similar broadcasts from Scotland’s primary civil court.
Streams from the inner house of the Court of Session have garnered over 200,000 views since last June. Among the cases featured was the SNP government’s dispute with UK ministers over their refusal to enact gender self-identification laws.
Lord Carloway, Scotland’s highest-ranking judge, remarked, “As the public increasingly adopts technology, we can evolve how we make courts more accessible.”
This change allows an approach of open justice. However, it has been stressed that the Courts are not to become a form of entertainment, but rather to help improve the general understanding of how the Courts work and the role of the defence and prosecution.
