Thomas Ross KC, a Glasgow based top lawyer has called for the introduction of a domestic abuse register.
Mr Ross cited recent cases of domestic abuse, and also added his own childhood experience of domestic abuse.
The register would operate like the sex offender registry already in place, requiring offenders to update police on their details and movements.
At present, people must make a request under Police Scotland’s Disclosure Scheme for Domestic Abuse Scotland to access any information regarding their partner and their history of domestic violence and abuse.
Ross believes this could discourage domestic violence, with non-compliance leading to court action and in some cases, jail time.
Justice Secretary Angela Constance expressed interest in exploring the proposal further to assess how it would complement existing measures.
